a pleasant surprise. Although I’ve adored Bon Iver’s music since I first heard “For Emma” in 2008, I went to this show for Leslie Feist. The Reminder is one of those rare perfect albums that strike the balance of writing, personnel and production most artists never achieve. To see her perform those songs and so many others from her amazing career was something I wasn’t gonna miss. Her band was terrific, filling out her guitar and voice (that voice!) with some great depth and character. That it was an awesome opening show was no surprise … but the headlining Bon Iver was. Justin Vernon’s songs, so delicate on disc, were jacked up for the stage to my great delight. And the touring band was huge, stacked with multi-instrumentalists hopping from setup to setup enthusiastically. You never knew what to expect next. And that, friends, is why we go to see concerts. I’M A WHEEL!. This was the second time I saw these fine gentlemen play “Impossible Germany” live and it was a moment I won’t soon forget. So many great songs were performed this night — including “Spiders,” “Ashes Of American Flags,” and a few others I had been dying to see — but that’s the one that kills me, whether I hear it in the car or while cleaning the house or, like this time, sitting in a tree on the fringes of Red Rocks’ stands. A gem in a catalog full of gems. The entire show was damn-near perfect with a nimble mix of mellow jams (“Jesus, Etc.”) and screamy freak-outs (“I’m A Wheel”). Lots to see. The love the folks that curate this festival have for indie rock is obvious; just look at the lineups they get for this thing. During the day I attended I elected to wander the Visitor Center’s conference rooms occupied by smaller indie bands like Blitzen Trapper and Denver’s The Photo Atlas, a hyperactive, sweaty punk band that are just fucking great. Nighttime brought out larger dance acts like Cut Copy and Justice but I was there to see Vampire Weekend who, at the time, were just starting to blow up and really get my attention.
