Technically great … but. Seeing a band you like in concert for the first time is a funny thing: you want the best blend of what you’ve loved on record and how you’d love to see that unspool live. You want it to be expected enough as an entry point but surprising enough that you’d never expect to love what you loved. When the band’s recorded output is all over the stylistic map, as Alt-J’s music really is, you really have no idea what to expect. For me it ended up being a tricky one to put my finger on. Sound-wise, this show was pretty great — the three members onstage created a lot of beautiful noise with impressive technical craftsmanship — but the songs are more aural acrobatics than straight-ahead stadium rockers, great if you’re stoned and blissed but challenging if you’re looking for a rocking riff to ride to shore. I’ll see them again, and knowing a bit more of what to expect will make it a better experience. Setlist
