Slow, sexy tease. The music this trio creates is a hypnotic blend of guitar and electronics that unfolds at a glacial pace, perfect for headphones but not necessarily for concerts. It can get your ass shaking — the producer is an expert beat maker who cut his teeth in London clubs — but their tendency is to tease rather than push. How would it be received by a live audience wanting to dance or, God forbid, rock? It was maddening in the best possible way. This band could easily craft a three-hour set of the type of sweaty, heart-pounding techno that could make rave kids shit themselves; instead they played some of the best-executed rock I’ve ever seen performed — with a ridiculous level of cool — and only injected moments of the dance-y stuff, creating an intriguing mix of fast and slow that I couldn’t love more. It was only guitar, bass, vocals and beats … but it felt like a dream. Setlist

Tunes and ‘tude. On record and onstage, the clear voice fronting this California 5-piece belongs to Jesse Rutherford, a charismatic, androgynous young man with attitude to spare. This was a solid show: atmospheric guitars, killer drumming and a ton of crowd energy. It’s unclear whether anyone will give a shit about these guys ten years from now but, on this night, they proved they deserved the stage they earned. Setlist

Made a fan. By the time these guys played the tiny Fillmore Auditorium they were quickly becoming Aida’s favorite new band. “Sigh No More” was in constant rotation in the house and in the car so we were looking forward to this one. The night began with an amazing opening set from local act Nathaniel Rateliff (pre-“Night Sweats”). From there things got crazy good: the headliners artfully blended gently-strummed poems, foot-stomping rockers and psychedelic freak-outs, often in the same song and always with nothing more than acoustic instruments. The group’s recorded output had already sold us on their folky approach to Americana music (this show was before “The Mumford Sound” took over popular music based in radio hits); this live show just cemented their status as a band for us to watch. It was the beginning of Mumford & Sons becoming an obsession in our family. Setlist

Tight. Solid. Accomplished. Interpol on disc, to me, is near-perfect: the tunes swing, the playing is air-tight, and the atmosphere presented in the songwriting transports you to another place and time. Their live show is a bit trickier: I wouldn’t call them showmen, but they make you happy to be there; the live interpretations of their songs don’t stray far from the recorded versions, but it’s intriguing to watch them unspool. I will never miss an Interpol show, and I think it’s because of the tension they create with the music. Many songs start slow and build, getting louder and fuller until you realize your heart is beating out of your chest and you’re bouncing around like an animal. Super fun show. Setlist

Bouncy, crazy energy. I got obsessed with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix on the strength of its radio hits and immediately dove into its back catalog. What a band! I adore these guys. Such great mixtures of guitar, synths and vocals (even though I have no idea what these frogs are saying half the time). The drummer is an absolute animal, rarely sitting down during the entire 2-hour set. The crowd was mental for it. And they did a great job mixing up the arrangements, especially during a molasses-slow “Everything Is Everything” with only Thomas’ voice and Christian’s acoustic guitar. Setlist

Time to dance! Despite the guitars and other live instrumentation, this was way more of a dance show than I thought it would be. That’s not a knock — it was sweaty and happy and tons of fun — I just never thought of these guys as anything like EDM. The younguns around me were partying like they were, though, and brought a celebratory energy not usually seen at the hipster rock shows I frequent. It was a refreshing and pleasant surprise I hope to experience again. Setlist

Tight as shit. By now these guys are a well-oiled machine. Frontman Britt Daniel struts the stage with more and more command every time I see him. The rhythm section — so crucial to their sound — swings like a metronome. I love that this band sounds like so few of their peers, on record and in concert. If you’ve never seen them live, treat yourself as soon as possible. Setlist

Big but small. The thing I love about John Mayer live is his ability to bring a crowd in close. Even in a shit venue like the huge, corporate-suck Pepsi Center, his song choices, his no-fuss playing and his stage banter make you feel like it’s you and him at a mutual friend’s back yard. He’s able to strike that delicate balance between satisfying the screaming girls in the front and the snobby dudes like me farther back: sing-along covers of Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac for them, deep-cut originals heavy on guitar for me. Barely any hits but every song’s a keeper. Such a talent. Setlist

Skronky and indulgent. Look, Billy Corgan can do whatever the fuck he wants—it’s his band—but I do expect some level of audience catering if I buy a ticket. Not a hits show, just the stuff he knows we like. No one in this audience was asking for the aimless, 20-minute Pink Floyd cover we got toward the end of this show, or any of the other sub-par, post-Machina originals. It was saved by the terrific guitar crunch and the thrill of finally seeing one of my most beloved rock drummers, Jimmy Chamberlain, live for the first time, but I’ll never again buy a ticket to see these Pumpkins.
