A pleasant surprise. This band is one of the few that my entire family can listen to and enjoy together. They’re local favorites (founding members met at high school here in Colorado) so I got us tickets to what I hoped would be high-energy show for an enthusiastic home crowd. We got that and a whole lot more. Frontman Ryan Tedder is a gifted talent for whom showmanship and charisma come naturally, and his band was incredible. Zach Filkins is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, toggling between workmanlike guitar chops, beautiful flamenco picking and unexpected texture on viola; Brent Kutzle stayed busy crushing it in equal measures on electric bass and gorgeous cello; and Drew Brown astounded on lead guitar. Despite the show’s well-choreographed production value and elaborate stage sets, Tedder managed to keep things fresh. His between-song banter is charming, and he’s written enough hits — for his day band and for other megastars — to pepper his sets with left-field gems. The guy’s a machine: his muscular voice never wavered, even while running around the stage or, at one point, through the adoring crowd. I figured this show would be a fine family distraction for a Saturday night; I never predicted it would be one of my favorite shows of that summer. Setlist

Hey Ho Hootenanny. I’ve always loved modern roots-tinged Americana music — the stuff that sounds at once well-worn and forward-facing. Not too old-timey but not too beholden to trends. These days there’s no shortage of bearded crews that fit this bill but, for me, there’s always been something special about The Lumineers. Whatever that something is, it was on full display this warm night just outside their home base of Denver. Voices had just the right mix of rasp and brightness; guitars and strings sounded fantastic together; and all of the “whup”s and “hey”s slid easily off their cuffs. And this band has some great tricks for creating intimacy among arena-size crowds. The performance was all a bit too earnest for me — I like a bit of rock-star swagger with my hippie homebodies — but, like all Americana artists trying to please these older fan bases, their toeing a delicate line, and I respect how they managed such an entertaining show. I’ll continue to play the shit out of their albums … and I’d absolutely see them again. Setlist

In transition, happily. This show marked the second time Aida and I have seen the expanded, electrified Mumford & Sons touring lineup and it’s growing on me. The folk-steeped acoustic qualities that drew us to the band in the first place are still there, but now they’ve expanded their bag of tricks for getting a crowd to dance; now it includes more than just foot-stomping and fast-strumming. The new bombast a drummer and some electric gear bring makes their live show, simply, more interesting to watch, and I love it. I hear more texture in the songs. I see a renewed energy in the faces of the players. And, no matter whether the guitars are plugged in or acoustic, the most profound instrument remains Marcus’ charm: with one off-the-cuff joke he wins over everyone from the front row to the cheap seats. The band and crew — from the fiddle player and the horn section, to the amazing light rig in a constant state of transformation — was in top form. Bonus points to the boys for delivering one our favorite new songs, “Monster,” and for the acoustic micro-set where they sang old-timey harmonies around a single microphone; demerits to the douchebags sitting behind us that wouldn’t stop talking during any of it.
