A pleasant surprise. This band is one of the few that my entire family can listen to and enjoy together. They’re local favorites (founding members met at high school here in Colorado) so I got us tickets to what I hoped would be high-energy show for an enthusiastic home crowd. We got that and a whole lot more. Frontman Ryan Tedder is a gifted talent for whom showmanship and charisma come naturally, and his band was incredible. Zach Filkins is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, toggling between workmanlike guitar chops, beautiful flamenco picking and unexpected texture on viola; Brent Kutzle stayed busy crushing it in equal measures on electric bass and gorgeous cello; and Drew Brown astounded on lead guitar. Despite the show’s well-choreographed production value and elaborate stage sets, Tedder managed to keep things fresh. His between-song banter is charming, and he’s written enough hits — for his day band and for other megastars — to pepper his sets with left-field gems. The guy’s a machine: his muscular voice never wavered, even while running around the stage or, at one point, through the adoring crowd. I figured this show would be a fine family distraction for a Saturday night; I never predicted it would be one of my favorite shows of that summer. Setlist
