A mixed bag. I had lots of reasons for buying a ticket to see this guy — he’s a founding member of my beloved Vampire Weekend, he’s a brilliant and influential producer, his solo material is intriguing — but didn’t know what to expect from his live show. It was a mixed bag. The bad? The screen projections behind the band were distracting. And I was really conflicted over the instrumentation of his touring band: he brought no guitars nor keyboards nor bass, just a string section playing most of the instrumental parts of every song, and pre-recorded tracks filling in the blanks. The strings were unbelievably fantastic — they cast recognizable songs from his solo catalog in a brand new light, and I give him a lot of credit for doing something different — but there was way too much recorded stuff filling in the spaces the strings and the drummer couldn’t cover. Rostam is a fantastic multi-instrumentalist; it would have been so cool to see him bouncing around between lots of different instruments and playing them live … but instead he just pressed play on tracks. The good stuff saved it for me: he showed real skill crafting a set list — it told a neat story over the course of the show — and it was a treat to see a star like Rostam in a club as tiny as Denver’s Globe Hall. Overall, though, opportunities were missed. Setlist
