Bewitching night noise. I’ve always thought this band’s music was fussed over in studios and best listened to on headphones. I had never heard it played live so I was anxious for the experience. I shouldn’t have worried. I already knew the songs were fantastic — especially this tour’s material from the amazing Painted Ruins — but didn’t know the places this band could take them on stage. They were given new life. Quiet got loud, pensive got snarled. I never knew what was coming next. And it was fun watching Ed and Daniel trade verses back and forth, seeing Chris wrangle a new instrument every couple of songs, and trying to follow drummer Christopher’s hands moving wildly around his kit. One of my favorite parts of Grizzly Bear’s music — the vocal harmonies, so gorgeous on record — were reproduced confidently, and were an incredible showcase for The Ogden’s cavernous acoustics. In fact, the dreamy nighttime quality of the music was perfectly suited for this dark and cozy venue. An awesome show. I’ll definitely be catching these guys again. Setlist
