Upbeat and cocksure. I absolutely love these North Carolina troublemakers so I can’t present an unbiased review of their live show. And this was my first time seeing them as headliners — not openers for other favorite bands — so I was doubly psyched. I’m assuming the rest of the assembled were in my same boat because people were going crazy for every note; Amelia had every soul eating out of her hand. She prowled the stage with a confidence I look for in my rock stars, and Nick did a killer job enabling her with his beats. I’m typically not a fan of music-by-laptop but these two make it work completely. The new material off What Now held its own alongside older favorites, each working the crowd into a sweaty froth. The stage set was cool, too, like a neon spaceship pulsing to the rhythm of the music. It was a perfect show for a stuffy theater and I couldn’t have been happier down on the floor to soak it all in.
